AN OVERVIEW
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is a clinical department with various responsibilities encompassing teaching, training, providing community service and conducting scientific research. In addition to participating in the teaching of the MBBS Program, the faculty members are also involved with the teaching activities of Post graduate students enrolled in the PG residency program under the purview of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).
VISION, MISSION AND GOALS
VISION: Achieving local, regional, and international excellence in the field of Family and Community Medicine through leadership in medical education, medical care, community and scientific research.
MISSION: To deliver excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate education in Family and Community Medicine, provide comprehensive and patient-centred primary health care with active community participation, and advance high-quality research addressing communicable and non-communicable diseases, in alignment with the Department’s enduring commitment to community well-being and professional distinction.
GOALS:
- Educational Excellence
To deliver high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education in Family and Community Medicine that equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for effective primary health care practice. - Clinical Care Quality
To provide comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered primary health care services that address individual, family, and community health needs. - Community Engagement and Population Health
To actively engage with communities through health promotion, disease prevention, and community-oriented primary care initiatives that improve population health outcomes. - Research and Scholarly Contribution
To advance and disseminate impactful research in Family and Community Medicine, particularly in the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, using internationally recognized methodologies. - Faculty Development and Academic Leadership
To support continuous professional development of faculty members and strengthen academic leadership in education, clinical practice, and research. - Quality Improvement and System Strengthening
To promote quality, patient safety, and evidence-based practice within primary health care services and academic programs.
Departmental acitivities
1-Teaching:
Teaching family and community medicine courses and evidence-based medicine for male and female students of the College of Medicine. The department also supervises and participates in teaching and training of Saudi residency programs of Saudi board of Family Medicine and also residency program of Saudi board of Preventive Medicine. In addition to the department’s contribution to some master’s courses for health colleges, such as a master’s degree in public health
2- Training:
. It includes training of health providers in order to improve the quality of health services.
-Training primary health care physicians and the health team in primary care centers
-Training of school health providers and the schools health team
-Training student counselors in schools and school principals on how to deal with various health problem
-Training students on how to deal with some problems
-Training parents of disabled students on how to quickly intervene to reduce the size of disability
-Participation in the membership of scientific committees of scientific conferences that study problems specific to society, for example: mental health and society - health education - the school environment - etc.
3-Research
The department implements many priorities clinical and community research projects and community services that will be beneficial to patients and promote community health by studying various health problems in the community in terms of prevalence rate and prevention methods. They are published in scientific journals. The department also contributes to the dissemination of scientific research concepts for health providers and raising The quality of medical research through participation in research schools and holding scientific workshops related to scientific research
4- Social activities and community service
The staff of the department contribute to the provision of medical and advisory services through the university clinics for family and community medicine in Abha - Medical City, and provide preventive and curative services to community members, in addition to active participation in global health days and events such as early detection of breast cancer and other health events.
