Department of Ophthalmology

Overview

The Department of Ophthalmology is a clinical department in the College of Medicine whose responsibilities include teaching, training, community service and scientific research related to eye health. Faculty members teach students in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program and contribute to postgraduate teaching and training in the Saudi Board of Ophthalmology residency program under the oversight of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).

Advance knowledge of ophthalmology and conduct research in relevant areas in accordance with the overall mission of the College of Medicine and King Khalid University.

Goals

1. Teach medical students the core knowledge of ophthalmology using the best and most up-to-date medical education methods, with an emphasis on practical clinical application.
2. Support faculty research activities.

4. Publish research findings and participate in local and international scientific conferences.

Department activities

Teaching

Teach ophthalmology courses to male and female medical students and to trainees in the Saudi Board of Ophthalmology program.

Training and community service

Train doctors in the joint Saudi Board of Ophthalmology program in the southern region of Saudi Arabia to improve the standard of ophthalmologists in the region. The department also participates in awareness and service activities to increase community understanding of eye diseases and their prevention.

Research

Conduct research on eye health problems, including their prevalence, treatment and prevention. The department also collaborates with other departments on joint research.
